GILDED SUFFRAGISTS Author Talk & Cemetery Tour (Books Sold by The Lit. Bar)

  • Woodlawn Cemetary East 233rd Street & Webster Avenue Bronx, NY 10470 (map)

In Gilded Suffragists, historian and former journalist, Johanna Neuman excavates the identities of the women on the front lines of the movement to secure women’s right to vote, describes their rivalries for power within the suffrage movement, the debate over chivalry that complicated their mission after the sinking of the Titanic, and their political conflicts during the First World War. Examining the question of motive, Neuman finds that in many other ways – from riding bicycles to pursuing careers, from advocating an end to marriage to an embrace of pacifism – these wives and daughters of the Gilded Age titans of American capitalism -- with names like Astor, Belmont, Harriman and Vanderbilt -- were part of the swirl of change known as modernity.

This author talk will explore the suffrage career of Alva Vanderbilt Belmont, followed by a book signing, and tour of grave site.
